Training school-based nurses in Nepal is one of the most exciting but also challenging projects we have decided to embark on. However, there is lots to do before we actually start training our nursing colleagues. How ready and prepared are schools and teachers to welcome nurses to their teams? What are the views, experiences and beliefs of teachers regarding mental health? Do we have the right tools to fight the stigma that surrounds mental illness and those affected by emotional problems? To answer some of these questions, our team is spending 3 weeks in the Birendranagar Municipality, north west Nepal, engaging with teachers, parents, school masters and local authorities. One of our priorities, is to ensure that those directly involved in children’s education have a saying and an active role in this project and in the overall provision of good health care for children in Nepal.
