Today, the 10th of September, is World Suicide Prevention Day. Did you know that more than 700,000 suicides were reported globally in 2019? Did you also know that talking to someone about suicide or self-harming can be of great help rather than an encouragement to end their lives? We need to talk more about these difficult but important issues. There is no point in hiding them under the carpet, pretend they don’t exist or never happen. Talking about it is one of the first steps to reduce deaths due to suicide. To raise awareness on this issue, our Kathmandu-based team spent the day chatting to senior nursing educators about their views on self-harming and the importance of having someone to talk to in times of emotional distress.
