Today the 10th of September is World Suicide Prevention Day. Every year, more than 720 000 people die due to suicide around the world. In countries like Nepal where most of Jaya Mental Health’s work takes place, suicide is one the leading causes of death of working-age women. WHO’s triennial theme for 2024-2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with the call to action “Start the Conversation”. This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. This is what we do in South Asia – reach out to those at risk, train more health workers who can support people in need, and fight the stigma that surrounds suicide and self-harm. We were delighted co-organise and join-hands with staff from the Mental Hospital and other organisations in this morning’s walk around Kathmandu – an important gesture for the global campaign to change the narrative on suicide.
